The word "person" derives from the Greek word meaning mask or the role played by an actor in a theatre performance. A mask  wholly or partially covers the face.  It transforms the person behind it into something or someone  other than who they are,  a dramatic portrait of spirit beings, departed ancestors, or the representation of  invisible powers.

Many masks are made according to a traditional style, and  worn by trained performers. The elaborately costumed dancer, with vibrant music, and highly stylized movements, marked ceremonial events or important social, religious, and moral values for the whole community. If one looks closely at the masks' artistic and symbolic detail, one can perceive these values within the masks themselves.
